Grant project: Youth Field Trip Program
Funding Details: $45,000 over 2 years
Wasatch Communtiy Gardens will create a formalized Youth Field Trip program that will be an ongoing, core component of their Youth Gardening program. They plan to quadruple the number of youth participants that they serve through 2010 - 2013. They will offer the field trips to Title 1 schools at no cost.

Grant project: Youth Community Economic Development Initiative
Funding Details: $100,000 over 2 years
This initiative will enhance the financial well being of young people in Greater Victoria through experiential "learning while doing" to create new economic opportunities through social enterprises, cooperatives, green and other micro-enterprises. This project addresses a gap in programs and social infastructure in the region to support healthy and sustainable transitions for young people into employment and self-employment.

Grant project: The ENABLE Program for Children & Youth
Funding Details: $67,860 over 2 years
This program meets the needs of many of the 60,000 immigrants that come to BC every year, with over 1/3 of these newcomers under the age of 14. The Enable Program assists in the settlement of young newcomers to Canada through several key activities including homework clubs, tutoring programs, adjustment support groups, youth activity nights, youth theatre projects and summer camp. The Foundation grant will increase the capacity of these programs to accomodate more youth, and assist in developing a sustainability plan.

The Advanced Teen Artist Program will provide 4 advanced level, after school arts classes and one intermediate level class to Seattle area youth through the All-access program; professional development to teaching artists for every All-access class; and will conduct a thorough evaluation for every class. The classes are intended to build a pathway for high-needs students in Southwest Seattle to participate in rich aftershool opportunites.

Grant project: Expansion of After-Scool Music Program for Underserved youth in "Two-Day a Week" Model
Funding Details: $30,000 over 2 years
Seattle Music Partners free, after school program is an innovative combination of weekly music instruction and one-on-one mentoring. The grant will be used to fund the pilot expansion of an after-school program for underserved elementary school participants. The funds will be used to support additional transportation, instruments, curriculum development and staffing costs.

Grant project: Step UP!
Funding Details: $75,000 over 2 years
Step Up! is a 6-month personal development program for young offenders aged 16-18 with multiple and complex needs in Birmingham, England. The program will specifically target those offenders who are experiencing barriers to learning and development and in addition have issues relating to emotional and mental well being and substance misuse. The goals of the program are to reduce number of youth who reoffend as well as reduce barriers to learning and increased well being and employment for the community.

Grant project: CATCH Fight Against Childhood Obesity
Funding Details: $100,00 over 2 years
YMCA has deveoped an evidence based Comprehensive School Health Progam called "Coordinated Approach to Child Health" (CATCH). This grant will allow YMCA to further develop and expand this after school program by licencing CATCH and extending the ages they serve. In addition, they plan to add an initiative called "Get Fit By Exergaming," which will incorporate an emerging trend that combines video games and fitness to excite children about physical activity.

Feasting for Change: Reconnecting to Food, Land and Culture is a project guided by a broadly representative working group collaborating since May 2007 to support urban and rural Aboriginal Communities in Southern Vancouver Island to enhance their food sovereignty. This program will now be administered by the Saanich Adult Learning Center, and will include the development of a Teaching Sustainability Site as well as Sencoten immersion programming.

Young Heores is an essential part of continuum of programming for children ages 6 to 18 that helps develop lifelong active citizens, civic leaders and social entrepreneurs. Grant project: Clubhouse Advanced Robotics Summer Academy

The Tacoma Intel Computer Clubhouse was developed to address access to, exploration of and empowerment through computer and digital technology. They empower disadvantaged inner-city youth to think critically, work collaboratively, become life long learners and seek creative solutions to real problems within a challenging environment. This grant extends the robotics work of youth in the Girls Math, Science and Engineering (GMSE) and the Boys Math, Science and Engineering (BMSE) programs through the summer months.

UrbanTrekkers provides a long term program consisting of outdoor, hands-on learning and mentoring to urban youth from Camden, New Jersey. Using the world as the classroom, they seek to broaden the base of their students' understanding in the fields of nature, arts and culture. This project exampnds their programs reaching more kids. They will begin serving kids outside of their Academy by also enrolling youth part of the UrbanPromise Ministries Street Leaders program - a group of youth from around Camden who are employed by UrbanPromise to work in their After School and Summer Camp programs.

Grant project: Citizen Schools - New Jersey Civic Engagement and Growth Initiative

Citizen School - NJ operates a 30-week program in Newark in partnership with the Ivy Hill and First Avenue Schools and enrolling students for the entire academic year, five afternoons per week, from school dismissal until 6 pm. They offer an integrated program of academic skill-building, leadership, teamwork and fun. This funding will support a new Director of Development and Civic Engagement to build pipelines of civic partners to serve as Citizen Teachers, recruit and support volunteers of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Initiative and develop plans for sustainable growth.

Grant project: “NETS” – Nutrition, Education and Tennis Support
Funding Details: $40,000/yr for 3 years
The social and academic needs of middle school students are many and acute, particularly in light of research which indicates that 9th grade is a “make or break” year that significantly influences a student’s decision whether or not to stay in school. NJTL’s after-school program, NETS, addresses both the academic enrichment and social/personal development of these vulnerable students. This grant funds three after-school sessions during the school year that focus on tennis, character development and fitness and will emphasize developmental skills and strategy.

Grant Project: Boatbuilding Project
Funding Details: Matching up to $10,000
The organization worked with a charter school in Asbury Park, NJ to engage 8 students from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades in a boatbuilding program. The students participated in classroom-based learning that focused on simple physics, measuring and fractions, local history, and wood shop safety. They successfully built a boat that was launched in the nearby water! The group was responsible for all aspects of building the vessel, including reading plans, measuring and cutting, putting the pieces together, and painting.

The grant funded a new staff position to enhance the organization’s Community Gardening and Nutrition Education Program. This Community Gardening and Nutrition Education Program Manager is helping families to not only eat better today, but into the future. The Manager will focus on building and maintaining strong partnerships with the local community including neighborhood schools.

Grant Project: Oceans and Climate Semester program
Funding Details: $121,000 over 3 years
SEA is dedicated to providing opportunities for students to develop a greater knowledge of the ocean environment and its relationship to human affairs. SEA is also committed to providing an opportunity to develop one’s own cognitive skills, such as problem solving and teamwork, and positive personal traits, such as self-confidence and respect for others. This grant is for a new Upper Division Oceanography curriculum beginning in Fall, 2006 offering of an Oceans and Climate Semester. Unlike a regular SEA Semester, the proposed course will have an oceanographic theme. Using this broad theme, these oceanography-focused courses will be subtitled to provide a regional focus and to better utilize the opportunities their respective cruise tracks provide. To complement our strengths in student-centered field research, the oceanography shore component will feature three guest lecturers. These visiting faculty will be recognized experts in their field, and will be chosen based on the theme of the course and cruise track.
